Answers of President of the Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Aliev to the questions of journalists regarding results of the VIII OIC Summit upon return to the motherland at the Bina airport - 11 December, 1997

Question: What could You say about the primary aims of resolution of Tehran Summit connected with Azerbaijan?

Answer: In itself the Summit is an important event of the international life. Three years ago, the Summit was held in Morocco. 55 countries, represented at the highest level in their majority, took part at this Summit. Many issues were discussed. I think the Summit was successful as the documents aimed at promoting a greater unity of Islamic countries were adopted there.

A number of important documents, including a document connected with armenian-azerbaijan conflict, denouncing armenian aggression against Azerbaijan and demanding pull-out of armenian troops from the occupied territories, supporting the efforts made by OSCE Minsk group and approving the resolution of Lisbon Summit regarding the settlement of this conflict were adopted at this Summit. In one word, I am satisfied.

Question: What issues were touched while discussing azerbaijan-iranian relations?

Answer: We spared much time to azerbaijan-iranian relations. I had a very important meeting with President of Iran Mohammad Khatami and supreme religious leader of Iran ayatollah Khamnei. I think we discussed thoroughly the issues touching bilateral contacts.
