Historical background to the document "Speech of the Acting President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, chairman of the Supreme Soviet Heydar Aliyev at the meeting with the intelligentsia at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Azerbaijan (September 21, 1993)"

During his socio-political activity, which is more than 30 years, Heydar Aliyev always took care of science and education. After returning to power his interest in this field was seen from the first days. One of his meetings was held in 1993 at the building of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences and it may be understood as his care to the scholars, great attention to science.

With the resolution on May 15, 2001, the Academy of Sciences was re-named to the National Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijani Republic. By the resolution on January 4, 2003 the Academy got the status of the supreme organ of the government which is filling the scientific and technical policy of Azerbaijan.
