Historical background to the document "From the speech of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev at the rally of the workers in front of the Presidential Palace (Baku, October 4, 1994)"

The first contract on joint developments in the Caspian oil deposits signed on September 20, 1994, between Azerbaijan and several countries on concerned a number of foreign and local forces. A few days later, on October 4, 1994, instigated and supported by some foreign countries, the then prime minister Surat Huseynov attempted an armed coup.

Interference of Heydar Aliyev in time and his appeal to the people on television allowed protect the statehood. Thousands of people gathered in the square in front of the Presidential Palace prevented the coup attempt.
