Historical background to the document "Speech of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev at the I Congress of the World Azerbaijanis (Baku, Respublican palace, 10 November, 2001)"


Given the importance to discuss the issues of strengthening the relations of the Azerbaijanis living abroad with the independent Republic of Azerbaijan, ensuring the unity and solidarity among the Azerbaijanis of the world, as well as developing and coordinating the activities of the Azerbaijani communities, societies and associations, the First Congress of the World Azerbaijanis was held in Baku on November 9-10, 2001 with the decree dated May 23, 2001, of Heydar Aliyev.

The conference was attended by 406 delegates and 63 guests representing over 200 organizations of the Azerbaijanis living in 36 countries. The Congress adopted the following documents: “Resolution of the the First Congress of the World Azerbaijanis”, “Appeal of the delegates of the First Congress of the World Azerbaijanis to the All Azerbaijanis around the World”, “Appeal of delegates of the I Congress of World Azerbaijanis to the world community, international organizations, governments and parliaments of foreign countries concerning the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh”, “Appeal of the First Congress of the World Azerbaijanis to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev”, “Appeal of the delegates of the First Congress of the World Azerbaijanis to the nation of the USA concerning the terror attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001”.
