From the talk of President of the Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Aliyev with Secretary-General of the Arab League Ismat Abdul Majid - Tehran, 10 December, 1997

Ismat Abdul Madjid: I heartily greet President of Azerbaijan, prominent politician Heydar Aliyev and state that it is a great honor for me to meet him. I attentively follow the progress attained by him within the latest years in the state construction and implementation of reforms in Azerbaijan and I am very pleased with it.

Heydar Aliyev: I appreciate You for kind words and emphasize that establishment of close links between Azerbaijan and Arab League is of great importance.

I state that since 1988, Azerbaijan has been subjected to the aggression by armenian armed forces. As a result of this aggression, 20 percent of territory of our republic has been occupied and more than a million our citizens have been driven away from their native lands and live now in hard conditions in tents. I emphasize that we feel a need for resolute support of Azerbaijan`s position by Islam countries and unions in order to put an end to this conflict by peaceful way.

The latest propositions forwarded by the OSCE Minsk group co-chairs for peaceful settlement of the armenian-azerbaijan conflict have raised our hopes. We are hopeful for the efforts by world community and influential states to achieve return of refugees to native places and restoration of territorial integrity of our independent country. I state on my confidence that owing to the support of world-wide peaceful forces we will achieve peaceful settlement of the armenian-azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
