Founder of the Safavid state in Azerbaijan, statesman, commander, declared shah of Iran in Tabriz in 1501. The Safavids became one of the mightiest states in the Near East under his rule; wrote poems in Persian, Arabic and Turkish. Turkish became dominant during his rule and was used in diplomatic correspondence
